Flora and Fauna
FLORA
The Flora of this area is varied due to the extension of the territory, from sea to mountain. Has the presence of natural forest and non explored mountains.
Mainly is known by the Larch forest of pure formation and “Lenga” of mixed formation that vary according to the land and climate.
You can appreciate the marvellous and thousand-year-old Larch forest in the Andean Larch National Park (Parque Nacional Alerce Andino), which is located in the Cochamó commune. This park amazes with the magic of its thousand-year-old Larch woods, where you can also appreciate all of this sailing in kayak.
The “Lenga” forest is mainly in the Patagonic Andean Forest, which receives the rainfall mainly in shape of snow. This species participates in some places of the zone more than in others.
You can also appreciate the Patagonice Forest with Coniferous, which is a forest of scant presence and distribution area, is located in valleys, with favourable environmental characteristics. It is better to appreciate them in down part of the mountains of the Argentinian Patagonia. There is only one community present in the middle area of the big basin of the Futaleufú and Palena rivers.
You can not leave behind the wonders of the biggest private Park of Chile, Pumalín Park (Parque Pumalín), where you can enjoy the most varied and beautiful species of the area.
Fauna
The diversity of environments given by the climate conditions, topography and substrates, present in the Palena Province make this territory to have different kinds of hábitats for the wild fauna where it can shelter and satisfy its needs of space, feeding and breeding. That is why in the region there are environments of; sea, beach, river-stream, lakes and wetlands, grassland and residential areas.
All of these environments allow the association of multiple communities of fauna linked to them. Also the formation of places of links between one environment and another that make even higher the amount of species. These places guards the species of each of these environments and gives the chance to watch other species that are sheltered in one environment and finds their food in another, or find its food in its environment and finds its breeding place in another.
Among the different species you can watch the “Huillín”, which is the river otter. Also the “Chungungo” which is a sea otter and is found from Arica to Magallanes. Another species similar to the otter called “Quique” is also seen in the area. And the “Guiña” the smallest mountain cat of the world.
Amongst other species there are foxes and pumas. The coipo which is a big size rodent that inhabitats Chile and that swims. Also there is the “Lauchón de pie chico” which is another rodent; and not less important, the biggest bird of the world; the Cóndor, which lives in the mountains but can be seen if you are alert.
