How to get there

Chaitén is 204 km south from Puerto Montt. Has maritime access and through the Carretera Austral, Chaitén is connected with Coyhaique and Puerto Montt.

This commune is practically the entrance door to many different places to the Palena Province, considered as well, the mainly entrance to the Chilean Patagonia and the extreme south of Chile.

From Puerto Montt to Chaitén you can arrive through these ways;

On car from Puerto Montt, must take the route 7 towards the Reloncaví Sine, on the way to the south until arriving at Caleta La Arena, where the ferry must be taken. During this journey is possible to admire the exotic beauty of the extreme south nature,. Sea lion colonies and the impenetrable Chilean flora. After the trip the ferry arrives at Caleta Puelche and the road leads to Hornopirén. From there you must take another ferry which during a trip of five hours crosses to Caleta Gonzalo. From there you have to drive towards the south 56 km by the route 7 until you get at Chaitén.

There is also maritime transportation that departure from Puerto Montt that has as destiny Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas, but stop in Chaitén. Besides, there are the catamaran Aysén Express and the barges TransMarChilav and Navimag. The departures are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If you come from Chiloé island, there is a ferry that departures from Chonchi.

There is also the public transportation which has frequent departures from the Bus station in Puerto Montt, Terminal Rodoviario, and also the Hornopirén bus station.

Aside the previous, in Chaitén there is also the Chaitén aerodrome where you can easily arrive from Puerto Montt.
